The Alpinist, Lavender Col

Mount Sneffels, San Juan Mountains, Colorado

This photograph was taken using a Nikon Coolpix P80 during a recent trip to the San Juan Mountains in Colorado (October 2010). We experienced the first snow of the season, and spent much of the climb in snow, especially in the final couloir. The alpinist is my good friend Hugh Fry. Mount Sneffels is a fourteen thousand foot mountain peak in the U.S. state of Colorado. It is located in the Mount Sneffels Wilderness of the northern San Juan Mountains, in Ouray County approximately 5 miles (8 km) west of the town of Ouray. The primary route to the summit follows a creek bed up from Yankee Boy Basin up through Lavender Col. Mount Sneffels is one of the most photographed mountains in Colorado at an elevation of 14,150 ft (4,313 m).
